How to Use Essential Oils for Your Hair
Essential oils are very concentrated and potent. Be sure to dilute them by adding them to your shampoo or conditioner or a carrier oil like jojoba or argan.
For example, here’s a recipe for a simple conditioning mask to halt hair loss.
Rosemary Conditioning Mask for Hair Growth
If your hair has been brittle and dry or falling out more than usual, apply this hair mask and let it work for half an hour before you shampoo and condition as usual.
Depending on the length of your hair, you may need more than one tablespoon of carrier oil.
Choose from one of the following carrier oils as your base:
- Argan oil is excellent for deep moisturization.
- Fractionated coconut oil is lightweight and odorless and antibacterial.
- Jojoba oil mimics the skin’s own sebum but won’t clog pores.
For every tablespoon of carrier oil, add five drops of rosemary essential oil.
Blend the ingredients well then massage the mixture into your scalp down to the ends of your hair.
Now that I’ve revealed one of the top essential oils for hair growth let’s get started on the reviews. I will add more information along the way.
Plant Therapy Rosemary 1,8-Cineole Organic Essential Oil
Rosemary is possibly the best oil for hair loss and regrowth.
But there are two different types of rosemary to consider.
This one with 1,8-cineole is excellent for reducing inflammation, improving respiratory function, and boosting energy. It soothes an irritated scalp and improves your sense of well-being with its aroma at the same time.
Plant Therapy steam-distills it from certified organic Citrus sinensis plants.
You can learn more about their products from their certified aromatherapists on staff. Plus, you can view test results regarding its purity.
Now Foods Rosemary Oil
Now Foods offers a large four-ounce bottle of rosemary oil that comes with a glass dropper. If you plan to use a lot of rosemary, this is a good deal price-wise.
The company has facilities in the USA and Canada. They perform extensive in-house testing and also use third-party laboratories to ensure quality and purity.
Why Use Rosemary Essential Oil for Hair Growth?
Rosemary is a common ingredient in hair care products. But why is that?
Studies show that rosemary stimulates hair follicles to create longer, stronger hair. It clears up dandruff and slows down premature graying and hair loss (1).
Researchers in Iran tested rosemary oil as a treatment for androgenetic alopecia. They compared it to minoxidil (the generic name for Rogaine).
After six months, the scientists found that rosemary significantly increased hair count.
But other oils also encourage hair regrowth, like clary sage.
Edens Garden Clary Sage Essential Oil
Clary sage is one of the best essential oils for acne and hair growth. That’s because it reduces inflammation, improves circulation, and stabilizes oil production (2).
Regular use of clary sage on your scalp will help your hair recover from too much styling.
Edens Garden is a family-operated business in California owned by women. They’ve been selling essential oils for a decade, and they’re picky about the quality of their products. Feel free to request test results on individual batches.
They derive clary sage from the Salvia sclarea plant.
Artizen Lavender Essential Oil
Interestingly, lavender is both one of the best essential oils for pregnancy and hair growth. I find that fascinating because hormonal changes during pregnancy often lead to hair loss.
Moreover, the extra stress of becoming a parent can also cause hair to fall out. But lavender counteracts stress and helps hair stay shiny and strong.
Artizen offers this four-ounce bottle of lavender essential oil with a glass dropper. If you use a lot of lavender, this is a good deal. After all, four ounces is equal to more than two thousand drops.
The bottle has a UV coating to prevent the oil from degrading in sunlight.
Also, the company offers a lifetime warranty and guarantee that you’ll be satisfied.
Majestic Pure Peppermint Essential Oil
Do you know how your skin tingles when you put peppermint essential oil on it? That’s because Mentha piperita increases blood flow. And better circulation is good for hair regrowth.
It’s no surprise that several shampoos and conditioners contain peppermint oil.
Majestic Pure packages their oils in the USA, and they include a glass dropper to help you measure.
Why Use Peppermint Oil for Hair Loss?
I’m happy to tell you that peppermint oil was found to promote hair growth just as well or better than minoxidil (3). That’s good news if you’re on a budget because peppermint oil is one of the least expensive essential oils to buy.
On the downside, be careful when you use peppermint oil because it contains menthol. Be sure to dilute to protect your skin from irritation.
Homemade Conditioner to Stop Hair Loss
If you don’t mind wearing a shower cap to bed, this homemade hair conditioner will perk up brittle, dry, thinning hair.
Combine ten drops each of rosemary and peppermint essential oils with two tablespoons of fractionated coconut oil.
If you have liquid vitamin E, add one teaspoon.
Massage the blend into your hair and scalp. Then put on the shower cap and breathe deeply. Enjoy the pleasant tingle as you drift off to sleep.
In the morning, wash your hair as usual. If you switch to a sulfate-free shampoo, you’ll get better results.
Plant Therapy Sandalwood Australian Essential Oil
Sandalwood doesn’t just smell good. It can repair split ends, too.
There are different types of sandalwood from different parts of the world. The Australian version from Plant Therapy is steam distilled from the wood of the Santalum spicata tree.
The aroma is calming and may also act as an aphrodisiac for some people.
Sandalwood Essential Oil – INDIA – by SenseLAB
Indian sandalwood comes from the Santalum album tree. It promotes healthy sleep, plus it’s antimicrobial. It’s often used as incense for meditation.
Like its cousin from Australia, you can use Indian sandalwood to repair damaged hair.
Recipe to Repair Split Ends
Blend five drops of sandalwood with a tablespoon of argan oil. Then gently work a small amount into the tips of your hair each day for two weeks.
In between uses, store it in a cool, dry, dark place.
Apply the mixture after you’ve washed your hair and it’s still damp.
Edens Garden Geranium Essential Oil
Geranium essential oil is expensive, but worth it. It’s one of the best essential oils for the skin and the hair.
It takes a lot of flowers from the Pelargonium graveolens plant to make a small amount of oil. Edens Garden offers guaranteed quality and purity for your money.
Aura Cacia Essential Oil, Roman Chamomile
Chamomile is also a common ingredient in hair care and skin care products. It reduces irritation and makes hair shiny and soft.
Aura Cacia says that their chamomile essential oil is ready to use right out of the bottle. That’s because it’s pre-diluted with jojoba oil.
They find ingredients from the best growers around the world then test every batch for quality and purity. Furthermore, the company funds local community benefits like preschools.
If you have hair thinning along your part or the edge of your scalp, massage this oil there at least once a day for a month. It’s lightweight and shouldn’t make your hair feel greasy.
Organic Cedarwood Atlas Essential Oil, 100% Pure USDA Certified Organic by Red Silk Essentials
Cedarwood motivates hair follicles to produce healthier hair. It also smells delightful.
The calming fragrance of Cedrus atlantica from Morocco will help you relax while it clears away congestion, heals flaky skin, and increases blood flow.
Red Silk Essentials has their Cedarwood oil certified organic by ECOCERT. They offer a 100% money-back guarantee on it.
Maximum Follicle Support Recipe
If you’re in a hurry to regain the hair you lost, try this recipe for rapid hair growth. For maximum benefit, have someone give you a scalp massage with it, then let it sit for at least ten minutes before you wash.
Remember that no hair loss solution is effective after only one application. You’ll need to repeat it regularly to slow hair loss and boost follicle production.
Use a base of 1 tablespoon of argan oil and one tablespoon of jojoba oil.
Then add five drops of rosemary, five drops of lavender, three drops of clary sage, and two drops of cedarwood or sandalwood essential oil.
Aura Cacia Essential Oil, Uplifting Bergamot Bergaptene-Free, 0.5 fluid ounce
Bergamot has a perky citrus fragrance that uplifts the mood. Additionally, it helps wounds heal faster and promotes a healthy scalp.
The important thing to note about
Aura Cacia’s bergamot oil is that it’s free of bergaptene, the component that makes the skin prone to sunburn. When you use this version of bergamot essential oil on your scalp, you won’t need to worry about your skin being overly sensitive to the sun.
Now Foods Essential Oils 10-Oil Variety Pack Sampler – 1oz Each
I know how expensive collecting essential oils can be. That’s why I wanted to tell you about this bargain.
Now Foods sells this sampler pack with one-ounce bottles of rosemary, peppermint, tea tree, lavender, tangerine, jasmine, citronella, eucalyptus, orange, and clove oils.
Each bottle contains approximately six hundred drops, which means you won’t run out anytime soon.
Argan Oil by Leven Rose, 100% Pure Virgin Cold-Pressed Moisturizer for Hair Skin & Nails, 4 oz
I’ve mentioned argan oil a few times so now I’ll tell you why.
Argan oil is ideal for adding shine and moisture to your hair. It protects against too much heat and sun. Additionally, it repairs the ends and keeps the scalp happy.
You probably noticed that shampoo manufacturers have been making a lot of products with argan oil lately.
It comes from Argania spinosa tree nuts that grow in Morocco. The nuts are cold-pressed to extract the wax. To get the most nutrients from argan oil, choose one that’s unrefined.
Leven Rose sources their ingredients from abroad and manufactures the oil in the USA. It’s packaged in an amber glass bottle with a stopper and comes with a money-back guarantee.
Now Solutions, Liquid Coconut Oil, 16-Ounce
This fractionated coconut oil isn’t for cooking, but it’s perfect for diluting essential oils. It’s not greasy, plus it doesn’t have any color or fragrance.
Some people apply straight fractionated coconut oil with no essential oils added to condition their hair and skin. It sinks in fast and encourages healing.
This pint bottle from NOW Solutions has plenty of content to let you experiment.
Now Foods Variety Moisturizing Oils Sampler, 4oz. Bottles
Extend your experimentation with this sample pack from NOW Foods. It contains bottles of jojoba, avocado, and sweet almond oils. All three are very good moisturizers and safe for use on the hair.
What Causes Hair Loss in Women?
You’re not alone – about one-third of all women will experience at least one episode of hair loss. It’s especially common at times of hormonal fluctuation like pregnancy or menopause.
Medications, stress, and malnutrition can also cause hair to fall out in excess.
Women suffer from androgenetic alopecia, or pattern hair loss, too. It usually shows up as thinning along the part line and on the top of the head.
How Can Essential Oils Fight Hair Loss?
When used for their aromatherapy benefits, essential oils lower stress. That alone may help you keep your locks lustrous.
But when applied directly to the hair and skin, essential oils combat hair loss directly.
Depending on the oil, they encourage hair follicles to produce normally. They keep the scalp moisturized and free from irritation.
As with any hair loss treatment, stay the course. It takes time for hair to recover.
Continue to use essential oils for hair growth daily for at least three months.
Conclusion
Hair loss can be very distressing. I’ve experienced it myself. I hope that what I’ve learned about essential oils for hair growth will help you achieve healthy hair once more.
I’d be happy to know which essential oils you tried and how they worked for you. Feel free to leave me a comment below.
