How to Use Essential Oils for Blood Pressure
First, please speak with your doctor about using essential oils if you are already taking blood pressure medication.
Some oils may interfere with the medicine’s effects.
Next, although some people choose to take oils internally, I’m only going to talk about aromatherapy and using oils on the skin.
That’s because most essential oil companies warn against ingesting the oils.
Keep in mind these are potent natural products.
Therefore, please be sure to dilute them with a carrier oil before applying them.
And please limit the amount of time you use them in the diffuser.
Where to Apply Essential Oils to Reduce High Blood Pressure
Put a couple of drops of essential oil in a teaspoon of carrier oil (like fractionated coconut, olive, grape seed, etc.).
Then massage that into the soles of your feet, your wrists, or the back of your neck.
Take deep breaths and enjoy the aroma while you try to relax.
Do You Have to Dilute Essential Oils to Use Them in a Diffuser?
No, you don’t need to dilute oils before you put them in a diffuser.
An ultrasonic diffuser, which is like a humidifier, disperses the oils amid droplets of water.
On the other hand, a nebulizing diffuser uses pure oil only.
In both cases, avoid blending the essential oils with carrier oils.
What essential Oils should Be Avoided If You Have high Blood Pressure?
Avoid using rosemary, thyme, and regular sage (not Clary Sage) essential oils when you have high blood pressure. They may increase arterial pressure or constrict blood vessels.
Peppermint oil sometimes gets a bad rap, but it might lower blood pressure (2).
Unfortunately, I’ve left it out of the reviews today because peppermint interferes with several kinds of medication, including those used to treat blood pressure (3).
Essential Oils with Scientifically – Proven Effects on Blood Pressure
I’ll begin the reviews today with oils that have a proven track record for lowering blood pressure.
If you’d like to do your own tests to see which oil is most effective, you can track results using a blood pressure monitor.
Measure your blood pressure while seated calmly. Don’t check it right after you eat or exercise – wait a half an hour.
Then diffuse or apply the essential oil of your choice.
After a few minutes, see how you feel. Has your mood changed? Recheck your blood pressure to see if the oil has made a difference.
Plant Therapy Helichrysum Italicum Essential Oil
Helichrysum was featured in a study done on animals that was published in 2008.
Researchers found that rats who were given helichrysum experienced changes in their heart function. Helichrysum acted as a vasorelaxant which supported the theory that it’s useful for managing high blood pressure.

Lavender essential oil is well-known to be effective at reducing stress.
There was a study published in 2006 that measured the effects of lavender and other essential oils on blood pressure. They tested them on 52 people assigned to three groups.
One group received a placebo, another set was the control group, and the third inhaled the blend of oils once a day for four weeks.
Statistically, there was a noticeable difference between the group who was treated with essential oils and the rest.
The conclusion was that inhaling essential oils is useful for lowering blood pressure for patients with essential hypertension (5).

In the study I mentioned above, the other oils besides lavender were ylang-ylang and bergamot.
Subsequently, let’s look at bergamot.

Diffuser Recipe to Lower Blood Pressure
In your diffuser, add two drops of lavender and two drops of bergamot.
If your diffuser has a water tank, you can let it run for about an hour before bedtime to fill your room with the relaxing scent.
Otherwise, if you have a nebulizing diffuser, 15 minutes should be sufficient.
Aura Cacia Organic Essential Oil, Sweet Marjoram
Another study published in 2012 examined the effects of inhaling lavender, ylang-ylang, marjoram, and neroli.
The researchers measured blood pressure and cortisol (stress hormone) levels in 83 patients. All the subjects were diagnosed with prehypertension or high blood pressure.
One group was asked to inhale the essential oils while another group was given a placebo or artificial fragrance.
