How to Use Essential Oils to Improve Your Focus
There are two main ways to use essential oils to boost your concentration.
The first is to breathe them in, and the second is to put them on your skin.
So far, studies have explored the effects of aromatherapy on mental focus. They haven’t tested whether absorbing the oils through your skin improves attention.
To breathe in the aroma, all you need to do is open the bottle and take a sniff.
But for maximum results, you’ll want to diffuse the oils. Here is an example of one of the best essential oil diffusers.

Why do you need a diffuser made specifically for essential oils? Why can’t you use a regular humidifier?
The reason is that essential oils will corrode a humidifier. The diffuser, however, is designed to accommodate the oils. It has features that make it more effective at dispersing the oils.

Run the diffuser for fifteen minutes before beginning the task that requires concentration. Enjoy the aroma while you set up the material you need to work and eliminate distractions. Then your mind will be ready to begin.

Besides diffusing essential oils, you can put them on your skin to absorb their benefits. But you need to dilute them properly first to avoid allergic reactions.
Fractionated coconut oil is inexpensive, odorless, and not greasy. It’s an excellent carrier oil.
Add one or two drops of essential oil to a teaspoon of fractionated coconut oil and massage the mixture into your skin. You’ll still get all the benefits of the essential oil because diluting it makes it safer, not weaker.
Now let’s move on to the top essential oils for focus.
Plant Therapy Rosemary 1,8-Cineole Organic Essential Oil
Rosemary is one of my top choices for improving concentration. It’s great for older children, teens, and adults.
A study published in 2012 showed that the aroma of rosemary improved people’s cognition. They performed faster and more accurately on tasks that required intense concentration (1).
But rosemary isn’t just useful for cooking and concentration. It’s also one of the best essential oils for relieving muscle pain.
Furthermore, rosemary’s aroma is proven to increase heart rate and respiration plus brain activity in humans. Participants in a study said they felt “fresher” after smelling it (2).
I selected Plant Therapy’s rosemary oil because it has a verified high amount of the active component 1,8-Cineole. It’s certified pure after multiple rounds of testing. Majestic Pure Peppermint Essential Oil
Soothing peppermint calms restlessness.
The cooling sensation alleviates headaches and invigorates the mind. The fragrance improves breathing.
But more importantly, for our purposes, peppermint oil improves performance on cognitive tasks and reduced fatigue.
A study published in 2018 measured the performance of people after they consumed peppermint (3). Peppermint affected neurotransmitters in their brains.
While it may be difficult to find food-grade peppermint oil, you can still benefit from diffusing it and applying it to your skin.
Dilute peppermint and massage it on the back of your neck. It will ease that tension headache so that you can get back to work with renewed energy.

Something to note: bergamot, like other citrus oils, can make you more prone to sunburn. Apply them to your skin only at night to avoid the problem. Or purchase a bergaptene-free version.
Blend to Improve Focus and Mood
Put 3 drops of frankincense, 2 drops of lavender, and 2 drops of bergamot in your diffuser.
If it’s a nebulizing diffuser, run it for about 10 minutes. Otherwise, let an ultrasonic diffuser work for about 30 minutes to an hour.
Edens Garden Vetiver
Vetiver doesn’t have a fantastic aroma by itself, but it blends well with many other essential oils. It’s both woodsy and musky.
A physician who worked with children with ADHD found that vetiver relieved their symptoms. It made it easier for them to remain patient and avoid distractions (4).

Lavender oil is all-around useful. Not only does it encourage relaxation, but it can also treat acne, heal wounds, and relieve headaches.
Are you concerned that lavender will put you to sleep when you need to study? Then blend it with other essential oils for focus like sweet orange and vetiver or peppermint.
Recipe to Counter ADD and ADHD Symptoms
Persons with attention deficit disorder tend to have trouble completing tasks that don’t interest them. It might be hard to follow directions and remember things. As a result, they may find themselves frequently anxious or frustrated.
That’s why many of the top oils for concentration don’t just stimulate the brain, but they also inspire calm.
Use a diffuser to disperse this aroma. Add two drops of each essential oil for concentration and study.
Each oil promotes calm and focus. Together, their fragrance will make you feel like you just had a nice day outdoors.
Frankincense Aura Cacia
Frankincense reduces negative emotions and stress. When applied to the skin, it relieves pain and helps wounds heal faster.
Diffuse frankincense with sweet orange and lavender to calm down hyperactivity and improve focus.

Tips for Better Concentration
We’ve all been there – just when we need to focus the most, it’s so hard to do.
Maybe we’re overly tired, or hungry, or our environment is uncomfortable.
Perhaps we are intimidated by the quantity or difficulty of the work we need to do.
Here are some tips to help you get focused in spite of all the challenges.
- Diffuse essential oils that promote a sense of well-being. Rosemary is scientifically proven to improve focus.
- Get rid of distractions as much as possible. Close the door, move the cat, put on noise-canceling headphones, turn off notifications, etc.
- Make sure you eat a snack and drink liquid before you start. Too much food and you’ll want to doze.
- Give yourself adequate light.
- Take breaks every half hour. Get up, stretch, do a little light exercise to get the blood flowing.
- Inasmuch as possible, tackle one part of the problem at a time. Then you can celebrate as each piece is completed.
- Reward yourself for meeting your goals.
Science has discovered that having plants around you can help you concentrate better. Even just an image of a meadow or forest makes a difference (5). That must be part of the reason why essential oils work so well!
